Caros Amigos e Amigas do Alentejo,

Escrevo-vos com profundo respeito e admiração pelas vossas tradições e pelo conhecimento que mantêm viva a alma desta bela terra. No Alentejo, temos tesouros naturais e culturais que, se bem cuidados e valorizados, podem florescer para benefício de todos.

A Importância do Montado

O sistema do montado, único e adaptado ao nosso clima, é uma herança que precisamos proteger e revitalizar. Com as mudanças climáticas, sabemos que o Alentejo está a ficar mais quente e seco, o que coloca pressão sobre os nossos sobreiros. Proponho que consideremos colher a cortiça a cada 12 anos, em vez de cada 9, para dar aos sobreiros o tempo necessário para se regenerarem adequadamente. Além disso, devemos honrar os sobreiros que têm mais de 100 anos, permitindo-lhes uma “reforma” digna, sem mais colheitas. Estas árvores majestosas merecem o nosso respeito e proteção.

A Arte da Canta Alentejana

A Canta Alentejana é um dos maiores tesouros culturais da nossa região. Este estilo único de canto, que transmite as histórias e emoções do nosso povo, é uma expressão viva da nossa identidade. Acredito que podemos partilhar esta arte com o mundo, convidando turistas a vivenciarem a Canta Alentejana e aprendendo diretamente com aqueles que a mantêm viva. Isto pode trazer novas oportunidades económicas para as nossas comunidades, ao mesmo tempo que preserva e celebra a nossa herança.

Reflorestação e Sustentabilidade

A reflorestação é uma necessidade urgente para proteger o solo, conservar a água e promover a biodiversidade. As árvores autóctones como o sobreiro, a azinheira, e o medronheiro, além de enriquecerem o nosso ecossistema, podem também ser um ativo económico se bem geridas. Incentivo-vos a considerar a plantação dessas espécies nas vossas terras, o que ajudará a proteger o nosso ambiente e, ao mesmo tempo, criar novas fontes de rendimento.

Eco-Turismo e Novas Oportunidades

O Alentejo tem o potencial de se tornar um destino de eco-turismo, onde os visitantes podem aprender sobre o montado, participar em oficinas de artesanato tradicional, e experienciar a serenidade e a beleza da nossa paisagem. A combinação de práticas tradicionais e inovação sustentável pode criar um modelo de desenvolvimento que respeita as nossas raízes e, ao mesmo tempo, prepara-nos para o futuro.

Dear Friends and Neighbors of Alentejo,

I hope this letter finds you well. I write to you today with deep respect for the land we share and a profound admiration for the traditions that have shaped our beloved Alentejo for generations. As someone who has come to love this region, I have seen firsthand the unique and invaluable knowledge that resides within our communities, and I believe that together, we can build a sustainable and prosperous future.

Reviving the Montado System

The Montado system is a testament to the deep connection between people and nature in Alentejo. This agro-silvo-pastoral system, with its carefully managed cork oaks, grazing lands, and crops, has sustained our communities for centuries. However, as we face increasing challenges from climate change—drier summers, hotter temperatures, and less predictable rainfall—it is crucial to adapt our practices to ensure the longevity of this tradition.

I propose that we consider extending the cork harvest cycle to every 12 years, allowing the trees more time to recover and build resilience in the face of harsher conditions. Additionally, I suggest that we allow trees that are over 100 years old to retire from production. These majestic elders have given much to our community, and letting them stand as symbols of resilience and history could benefit not just the land but also future generations.

Reforesting Alentejo

As the climate continues to change, reforestation is another critical step we can take to protect our land and our way of life. Planting native species, such as cork oaks, holm oaks, and other resilient trees, can help restore the natural balance of our landscapes. By reforesting Alentejo, we can combat desertification, improve soil health, and create habitats for wildlife, all while preserving the unique beauty of our region.

Reforestation efforts can also be an opportunity for community collaboration and education. By involving local schools, families, and volunteers in tree-planting initiatives, we can foster a deeper connection to the land and instill a sense of stewardship in future generations.

Embracing Eco-Tourism and Cultural Heritage

As we look for ways to sustain our livelihoods, eco-tourism offers an opportunity to share the beauty and wisdom of Alentejo with the world. Visitors from around the globe are eager to experience authentic, sustainable lifestyles. By showcasing the Montado system, traditional crafts like braiding, and our unique local culture—including the Cante Alentejano and traditional instruments—we can create a new source of income that also reinforces our cultural identity.

Cante Alentejano, with its hauntingly beautiful harmonies and deep connection to the land, is a cultural treasure that we can share with visitors. By integrating performances and workshops into our eco-tourism offerings, we can keep this tradition alive while providing an authentic and enriching experience for those who come to learn from us.
